Tasting Note
Deep ruby-purple in the glass, with generous aromas of blackcurrant, plum and ripe dark berries alongside tobacco, spice and a touch of coffee. The palate is juicy and full-flavoured, with ripe fruit supported by supple tannins and enough freshness to keep the wine lively. Savoury notes of leather, warm spice and subtle smoke emerge through the middle without overpowering the fruit. There is plenty of richness here, but the wine retains an easy, approachable balance rather than becoming heavy. Smooth and persistent on the finish, with dark fruit, spice and a gently smoky note lingering behind.

The Story
Boschendal’s history stretches back to 1685, the year referenced by this range, and few grapes feel more appropriate for it than Pinotage. Created in South Africa in 1925 from Pinot Noir and Cinsault, Pinotage has become one of the Cape’s signature varieties, capable of combining dark berry richness with spice and distinctly savoury character. Boschendal sources its 'Sommelier' Pinotage from the broader Coastal Region, producing a ripe, modern expression built around black fruit, plum and tobacco spice rather than the more rustic style historically associated with the grape. The estate also places considerable emphasis on environmentally responsible production, holding IPW certification and working as a WWF Conservation Champion.
